USS Monitor Center

Through interactive engagement, visitors learn why and how a scuttled Union frigate, the USS Merrimack, was converted into the South’s deadliest warship––the ironclad CSS Virginia.

In 1861, the Confederate States Navy raised and dry-docked the burned-out hull of the Merrimack. By 1862, its conversion into a casemate ironclad ram was completed. This interactive, placed in front of a full size replica of the Virginia, provides a step-by-step understanding of its transformation.
